We live with a deep awareness of our climate crisis and the deep environmental injustices of our time. We commit to four practices, grounded in Unitarian Universalist principles:

  • Environmental Justice: We partner with marginalized communities who are hit first and hardest by environmental crisis.  In partnering with these communities we are able to address human and environmental needs at the same time.
  • Worship and Celebration: As we work together towards a cleaner, more just and sustainable world, worship inspires our work and reminds us of what is most sacred and most true.
  • Religious Education: Our workshops and programs for all ages shape attitudes and build practices that are sustainable and spiritually-grounded.
  • Sustainable Living: We treat the world more gently by using fewer resources and being mindful of the choices we make, both as a congregation and as households.

Solar Panel System

Our 24‐kW solar system was completed and energized on March 29, 2017. In the first year, it generated about 27,000 kWh / 39,100 kWh used, or 69%. This saved us about $1,100 and is the equivalent of planting 488 trees. The system covers about 3/4 of our new flat white roof membrane. Our solar contractor operates and maintains the system for at least the first 6 years, and we buy electricity from them through our Power Purchase Agreement at half the Ameren rate, or $0.04/kWh. Butterfly Native Plant Garden

From UUCUC member, Andy Robinson

In August 2019, I provided a garden tour for Wild One’s from Bloomington who granted us the money for the tall slope gardens. They were impressed by all of our gardens and kept asking: is this one the grant garden? They also liked that we have had insect scavenger hunts, kids helping, and that we leave as many stalks as we can for the insects until spring. It worked very well last year to just cut the dead growth in the spring up into little pieces for natural mulch.

Thanks to everyone’s help through the years for keeping the place native and beautiful.
