From Kate Barton, Facilities Director
As most of you may be aware, plans are being finalized for the demolition of the UUCUC’s rental property located at 310 W. High Street, the house located adjacent to the parking lot on the south side of our Church building. The decision to demolish the home was not an easy one, however, the cost of needed repairs to the structure, combined with numerous code violations from the City of Urbana left the Board of Trustees with no other option than to implement at this time the congregational mandate to tear it down.
Thanks to the hard work of Brian McDermott, Jerry Frye and members of the Building And Grounds Advisory Group, the tenants were agreeably relocated and a bid has been secured and approved by the Board of Trustees for demolition by the end of July 2020. As part of the demolition, all remaining materials will be removed, and the location will be restored with fill and grass seed will be spread across the site.
Here is what we have planned prior to the house coming down:
- PACA – A local architectural salvage group will be onsite one to two weeks prior to demolition to remove several items to be sold at their resale location.
- Appliances – These will be donated to a local group who helps to relocate immigrants in our community.
- Other items – There are several plants and other items around the property that are available to members. Things like plants, field stones, and paving blocks located along the Church parking lot (not those along the sidewalk) can be shared with you during the week of July 12th. You will be responsible for getting these items relocated. A donation to the Church is encouraged. A donation for stones in the amount of 25 cents per pound would be customary for what one would pay if they were purchased elsewhere.
