Talking with Racist Uncle Joe: Strategies for Having Difficult Conversations
Friday, February 2 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
OLLIE – 301 N Neil Street, #201, Downtown Champaign

Engaging with friends, relatives, or even coworkers about challenging topics can be highly stressful, but also an important part of staying true to yourself and your beliefs. This is especially true when someone is saying things that are insensitive, rude, or hurtful on matters such as race and gender. This interactive workshop is designed to help us prepare how to respond in a group setting through creativity, compassion, and strategy.

Privileging Model: Interactive Workshop (Morning Session)
Saturday, February 3 from 10:00 to 11:30 am

UUCUC Fellowship Hall

This workshop helps participants learn more about what social identity-based privilege is and how the act of privileging affects everyday decision-making. Participants will talk about examples of how privileging can not only provide access to opportunity or resources, but also an escape from responsibility or obligation. Participants will also learn about intersectionality and other factors that make privileging complex.

Privileging Model: Train the Trainer (Afternoon Session)
Saturday, February 3 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm
UUCUC Fellowship Hall

This training provides materials and knowledge for understanding how to lead small and large groups (up to 75 people) in understanding privilege. Participants first experience the workshop, and then deconstruct it to highlight key facilitation points. Participants are also assisted in learning how to adapt the workshop for various audiences (high school students, adults, workplaces, etc.).

Light refreshments will be served.
