Do you enjoy books? Do you like to discuss books and listen to others’ thoughts? If so, please consider joining the new Racial Justice Book Group. Organized by Sandy Hannum and Priscilla Kron, the book group is an offshoot of our Racial Justice Team, in conjunction with Adult REE.
The group will read and discuss books dealing with a broad range of issues related to racial justice. We plan to include both nonfiction and fiction to explore wider views and to appeal to varied interests. Through discussions, we hope to understand ourselves and each other better, and to empower ourselves to create Beloved Community as expressed in the 8th Principle and by the value of “Justice.”
The group will meet in person in Fellowship Hall from 6:30-8:00 on the 4th Monday of each month (May 27, June 24 , July 22). We welcome folks from YRUU and up. Our May book will be Biting the Hand, Growing Up Asian in Black and White America, by Julia Lee, an associate English professor in Los Angeles. “I am forty-six, a woman of Korean descent, born on sacred Gabrielino-Tongva land. The nation is at another moment of racial reckoning. I want to add my voice to the chorus, write myself into this tattered musical brocade, cast my own thread out into the vacant vast surrounding. This book is that attempt. . . . I hope you, my reader, will cast your own threads, tell your own stories, and connect with other souls. Let’s build a big, beautiful web of connection and strength. We, too, are America.” (JL)
