Parents and Guardians as Sexuality Educators

Dates: Sundays from February 11 through April 14 (excluding Spring Break)
Time: 4:00-5:30 pm
Facilitators: Kim Kranich and Kelly Skinner

Who can attend? Parents/guardians from the UUCUC congregation and members of the community at large who seek support and skills to be effective sexuality educators for their children. While sessions are held at the same time as the spring OWL classes, attendees do not have to have their children currently registered for OWL classes to participate.

The sessions are designed to meet the needs of adults raising children of a wide age range, from elementary through high school. Like OWL workshops, these sessions build comfort in talking about sexuality-related topics and offer skill-building activities. The sessions address topics in OWL sexuality education for children and youth but focus on participants’ needs as parents and caregivers. Participants are invited to engage deeply with their hopes and fears, values and practices.

The program emphasizes the adult’s ongoing adult responsibility to share accurate, current information, as needed, with their child or youth. These sessions also help adults build skills for healthy family communication. Communication is the foundation of this program, just as it is the foundation of healthy relationships within and beyond families.

Class Schedule

After the first two sessions, the group will decide which topics they want to explore for the remaining sessions. Topics include: gender identity, sexual orientation, relationships, sexual health, decision making, consent, social media, pornography, unintended pregnancy, and ethical non-monogamy.
