Joys and Sorrows
Sunday, October 6
From Jill Houser: I want to submit a concern to share Sunday concerning my home town of Asheville North Carolina.
There have been 160 confirmed deaths following this storm, with many missing.
The devastation has left many of us in shock, but the silver lining is that people are arriving with supplies and the willingness to risk their lives to dig out of the storm. Humanity is shining brightly and all but the essential has faded into the background for now.
Western North Carolina will never be the same. Please fill your heart with gratitude this morning and marvel at the impact of this storm; the power of nature and the selfless sacrifice that powers human beings to manifest goodness in their communities.
From Brittney Shipley: I’m grateful for the beautiful music that is always playing here every Sunday. Thank you, Juan, for your dedication to music and for exposing all of us to music we may otherwise not have known. Thank you to the worship team, choir, cruuners, and Pugs, for contributing to this joyful musical atmosphere.
From Courtney Krafczyk: Sorrow for my extended family who lost a baby on the day she was supposed to be born back in August. They are doing the best they can but are struggling too.
Sunday, September 29

From Kyle Kroha: Sharing the joy of passing my national board exam for LCSW on the first try!
Sorrow that my car decided- without warning, despite conscientious maintenance- to overheat & destroy its radiator, cylinder hear & head gasket in just 5 minutes on Friday. (Second time for the head gasket!)
From Jordan James: Rev. Sally, Sue, and Margaret were so generous with their time, energy, and knowledge yesterday to create a beautiful space of community for those of us considering formally joining this community. THANK YOU!!!

Yesterday evening, Claudia and I attended a most wonderful dinner and program in Fellowship Hall. But when I attempted to exit the church building and was encased in the elevette, that device refused to move. To be trapped in the UUCUC building is terrifying.

Sunday, August 11
From Jenna and Katie Zeidler: On Friday, we said goodbye to our dog, Taco. He had an aggressive stomach cancer that had taken his appetite but not his love of basking in a sunbeam or barking at the mail carrier. Some of you might remember Taco from performances at coffee houses! He was truly special and will be infinitely missed.
From Alyssa Knights: This Tuesday, we had to say goodbye to our sweet Chihuahua Danny. Without the efforts of this congregation and Care Core, we would have never had some of the best 4 years together. Everyone he came across loved him and he made a lasting impact on so many people’s hearts. From Cecilia Guerrero: I am attending virtually today but felt compelled to write this message. I have not attended a church for a while. I grew up religious but became disillusioned with the teachings due to various reasons. I later became agnostic/atheist, but still found that I wanted a place to express a degree of spirituality. I am so thankful that I found this space, which is so inclusive, positive, and non judgemental. I am counting this UU as my joy and sorrow today; my joy because of how beautiful of a space it is, and my sorrow because I did not find it sooner! I would like to attend in person in the future.

From Dani Nutting: My parents adopted a cat this past week!! This comes as a huge surprise to our family after pets have been hard no for my dad since our family dog passed when I was a toddler – “It’s too hard when they pass”…that was his argument. After the difficult loss of my grandpa (dad’s dad) in November, Dad’s heart is opening in curious new ways.

From David and Claudia Gross: Sorry to miss the church service today, but we are today on the Rotterdam of Holland America in the middle of the Panama Canal and having a great time.
From Lindsey Sharp: Remembering DJ Sheppard who died three years ago Friday. He wasn’t a member of this church but he was Ruth and Donnie’s father and my husband and I think he would have loved it here. We miss him every day and it feels good to hear his name spoken aloud. Anyway, seriously, don’t be too shy to get a colonoscopy.
From Kim Kranich: So glad that tonight the church begins a discussion with parents about parents as sexuality educators for their children. This kind of parental support is so needed. There is still time to join us. Sunday’s, including today, from 4pm until 5:39pm..And thanks to all of the OWL and REE teachers! What you do is a blessing.
From Nick Cragoe: My grandmother Pat passed away late Thursday at 94. She left a complicated legacy, but she helped kindle my interest in the art that is a huge part of my life, helped me to better understand myself, and the world is a little quieter without her in it.

After spending Jan 16-20 in the hospital due to extremely low sodium levels, we were thrilled to get him home and getting better there. Sharing a sorrow at holiday time:
For families that neglect children
And all the pain and scars they cause, inside and out
And all the joy they miss when children recover and move on in life without them
And all the people who don’t believe neglected children just because they survived and learned
To hide the scars, outside and in.
