This year the congregation has had opportunities for informal conversations concerning immigrant justice issues. From these discussions an Immigration Justice Task Force has formed as part of the Social Action Committee. We have chosen three organizations to collaborate with in the near future: the CU Immigration Forum, CU Friends & Allies of Immigrants & Refugees, and Welcome Kits for Unaccompanied Minors and new immigrant students of the Urbana Schools. We will highlight each of these organizations as opportunities become available.
The mission of CU FAIR ( www.cu-fair.org) is to support the resettlement of immigrants, refugees & political asylees in their transition from dependency to full self-sufficiency. The organization supports our new friends and neighbors in finding housing and jobs, securing medical care and available benefits, identifying optimal English-as-a-Second-Language training, financial management, budgeting and social and cultural integration.
To this end, CU FAIR has a number of teams for those interested in lending a hand: family liaison, ESL and tutoring, transportation, fundraising, donations store or housing as examples.
Stop by the Social Action table on Sunday, May 12, to learn more about CU FAIR. Consider joining us for our 1st Annual Dinner Gala on Saturday, May 25, 2019.
