IJT Donation to the Backpack Project

The Immigration Justice Team (IJT) has donated $1,000 to provide support for unaccompanied minors from Mexico and Central America who are living in our community. The backpack project was started by IJT during the previous administration to support the needs of these youth as they arrived in our area. This donation, in the form of gift cards, will be used to buy needed shoes, clothing, toiletries, medicines, etc., for over 25 students currently attending Urbana Middle and High Schools who are awaiting their asylum hearings. Lucia Maldonado, the Latino Family Support Liaison for the Urbana School District, works directly with these students and will manage the donation. Lucia purchases supplies for these students as needs arise. We are grateful to Lucia for her years of support for unaccompanied minors. And we thank you, the UUCUC congregation, for your support of the work of IJT.  For more information or to join the team, please contact Marilyn Ryan at Marilyn.ryan@gmail.com.
