Harvey Milk Day is celebrated each year on his birthday, May 22. Harvey Milk was a gay rights activist and the first openly gay person elected to public office in a major city. He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, but assassinated in 1978 by a disgruntled colleague. Harvey Milk Day is in honor of his achievements and a time to reflect on and work for LGBTQ rights and justice.
