In 1986, UUCUC’s Long Range Planning committee proposed that UUCUC and the Channing-Murray Foundation form a task force to investigate resource needs, programs, and facilities for a campus ministry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The Task Force met eight times and determined, among other matters, that an effective Unitarian Universalist presence on campus was necessary to “provide an alternative to the growing conservative religious movement, a place for free expression of religious thought and actions, and a focus for the discussion of liberal religious beliefs.”

In February 1987, the task force submitted a report to UUCUC’s Board of Trustees that included, in part, three recommendations:
1) The campus ministry should be an identified outreach of UUCUC;
2) Professional ministerial and support resources should be provided; and
3) 1209 West Oregon Street must be rehabilitated at considerable cost. If that money can’t be raised by UUCUC or elsewhere, the property should be sold and the money from the sale used for campus ministry.
