Esther Patt, Director, Champaign-Urbana Tenant Union

Talk Description: The vast majority of “affordable housing” programs target households with incomes at or above 50% of median income, leaving only a tiny amount of money for the lower income households who need the most help. Esther Patt looks at the housing challenges faced by low-income households from lack of affordable housing, limited aid, and discrimination based on conviction record, source of income and children.

Bio: Esther Patt is Director of the Champaign-Urbana Tenant Union and has worked on tenant issues since 1976. For 32 of those years, Esther was Coordinator of the Tenant Union at the U of I, serving student tenants. When she retired in 2012, Esther went back to Champaign-Urbana Tenant Union. Esther has been a resident in C-U since 1973 and earned a B.A. from the U of I. From 1994-2005, Esther served on the Urbana City Council member representing Ward 1.
