What is Juneteenth?

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed January 1, 1863 freeing all slaves, a number of people remained enslaved, especially in remote areas. This was especially the case in Texas, where thousands of slaves were not made aware of their freedom until June 19, 1865. Their celebration would serve as the basis of June 19 – or Juneteenth – the celebration of emancipation in the U.S.
