The Immigration Justice Task Force (IJTF) is hosting a virtual meeting to ask for volunteers to help carry out our hospitality / emergency refuge program, approved at this year’s annual meeting. Volunteering is a terrific way to get involved without having to go to meetings! You can join the meeting here:

The IJTF is committed to providing food and lodging for undocumented individuals and families in Champaign County who are in various stages of seeking asylum and feel threatened when the U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) is in town. Hospitality/emergency refuge could be for a few hours; one day; or a short overnight stay, but generally not for more than five consecutive days.
During our November 16th meeting, representatives of the Immigration Justice Task Force will walk through the details of our plan to carry out this program, and what we have done to make each task as easy as possible. Specifically, we are looking for members and friends to:
- Offer Spanish translation to facilitate communication with our guests. This can be done by phone.
- Provide one or more meals via a meal train that we will create.
- Wash sheets and towels after guests leave, and return them to the church.
- Help clean areas used during a guest’s stay.
- Be present for one or more shifts to provide support for our guests, as needed.
IMPORTANT: The IJTF recently received approval from the Board of Trustees and the COVID-19 Task Force to carry out this program while the church is closed. If we accept guests during these times, volunteers will be kept totally separate, and CDC guidelines followed. We will explain all COVID-related procedures during our meeting.
If you are not familiar with this program or want more information, feel free to call or email Pam at 773.556.3418 or pamelarichart1@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you on the 16th!
