Kids, youth, and even adults deserve age-appropriate sex ed. Be one of the awesome volunteers to teach OWL, a unique progressive lifespan sexuality program for our church and community.
Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a series of classes for different age groups that helps children, youth, and adults make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. As a dedicated program, we are able to discuss the subject in more depth than is possible in school. We go far beyond what is often considered sex education (anatomy, reproduction, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections) to include many other aspects of sexuality, including gender, sexual orientation, relationships, families, and feelings. It is a values-based program that develops self-worth, sexual health, responsibility, justice, and inclusivity. As an extra-curricular, opt-in program, we are able to discuss topics that may be considered too controversial for public school, such as gender identity and sexual orientation.
UUCUC offers classes for elementary grades (K-1 and 4-5), junior high (7-9), adults, and parents on a rotating basis. In 2024-2025, we are doing the junior high class, a parent group, and starting an adult class in the spring.
Classes are facilitated by a team of volunteer teachers who lead discussions and activities guided by a written curriculum. Volunteers must complete a weekend training and pass a background check. Many of our volunteers are social workers, counselors, in medical fields or education, or parents.
We have a special need for people interested in teaching an adult class or the grade 7-9 class in 2024-2025. Trainings are offered this summer/fall within a short drive of Chambana. UUCUC pays for all costs (registration, transportation, lodging, food) associated with the training in exchange for a commitment to teach at least three times in five years.
