Time: 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Location: Zoom Webinar (linking information below)
Are you concerned about how schools deal with the complicated topics of racism and our country’s racial history? You are not alone. This is an important part of the effort to create more racial justice and equity in our communities.
We have assembled a panel with an educator, a student, a parent, and a school board member to discuss how K-12 schools can constructively understand and teach about these issues. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Don Owen, former Superintendent of Urbana School District 116 and current CEO of Lead for Equity and Engagement, LLC. You will have an opportunity to ask questions of the panel.
Panelists include: Keyarah Johnson, honor student at Urbana High School; Posey, a doctoral student in Information Sciences who has worked with youth for more than a decade; Brandy Smith, Program Coordinator for YWCA and parent of two students in the Spanish Dual Language program in USD116; Elizabeth Sotiropoulos, Parliamentarian and school board member of Champaign Unit 4; and Nate Wahl, Restorative Practices Coach at Urbana Middle School.
Co-sponsored by the Racial Justice Program and the Religious Exploration and Engagement program of the UU Church of Urbana Champaign. Parents, educators, students and interested community members are welcome to participate in this discussion.
