Rose Window Centerpiece: Tree of Life, Ancient

Created in 1965 by Jane Anderson and Marjorie Mosely, under the direction of Robert Chase. An ancient traditional religious symbol from Hebrew, Babylonian and Hindu, this was one of the two forbidden trees in the Garden of Eden. This center has been used with memorial services.

Rose Window Centerpiece: Arrows of Conflict

Created in 1968 by Jane Anderson. A design by the Rev. Renford Gaines (Mwalimu Imara), it has a Trompe de l’Oeil effect: the arrows seem slightly in motion. One has a feeling as when trying to force together similar poles of two strong magnets: the resist making contact.

Sanctuary Banner: Islam

The Muslim creed written in Arabic represents Islam. Islam is the youngest of the three Western religions that have grown from the life and teachings of the Hebrew prophets. This calligraphy represents the most significant Islamic creed, “there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet.”

Sanctuary Banner: Yin Yang

The Ying Yang is the Taoist symbol of the interplay of forces in the universe. In Chinese philosophy, the Yang represents the two primal cosmic forces in the universe. Yin is the feminine moon, Yang the masculine sun. The symbol represents the idealized harmony of these forces; equilibrium in the universe.
