Title: Facilitating Dialogues on Contentious Issues 2.0
When: Saturday, November 16, 2019
Time: 3:00-6:00 pm (light refreshments will be provided)
Location: Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign (UUCUC), 309 W. Green St., Urbana 61801
Facilitators: Dr. Joycelyn Landrum-Brown and Dr. Joe Minarik

The following describes the training session:

We are inviting folks to learn some advanced techniques for facilitating group explorations (dialogues) on complex, messy social issues. In particular the training is aimed at helping participants enhance their current group facilitation skills by developing skills and knowledge used by us and others who facilitate intergroup dialogue courses (EPSY 203 Dialogues on Social Issues) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Whether for a workshop, film discussion, or as part of a class, we have found that facilitating dialogues on complex social issues can be improved if we take some time to prepare. Such preparation includes clarifying the main issue, identifying nested issues, and choosing the right words for those issues. Facilitation can also be improved when we generate clear well-formed questions. During this training we will also be giving folks the chance to explore how to interact with different types of participant comments in ways that enhance the exchange between participants.

This training will focus on four particular learning objectives:

  1. Topic identification and issue framing
  2. Identifying nested issues
  3. Generating well-formed questions
  4. Facilitating participant responses equitably (using the Bell and Roberts’ Storytelling for Social Justice framework)

Again, please rsvp by Thursday, November 14 at 5:00 p.m. to reserve your seat.
