Popcorn Theology – Origin

Popcorn Theology is a fun and engaging multigenerational program built around popular movies with spiritual or ethical relevance. We watch the film together, and then, after the movie, we discuss the movie’s themes and how they relate to our UU faith. Free fresh-popped popcorn and drinks are provided; feel free to bring your own movie snacks.

In September, members of the Racial Justice Team join us to watch and discuss the movie “Origin.”

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay, ORIGIN chronicles the tragedy and triumph of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson as she investigates a global phenomenon of epic proportions. Portrayed by Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Isabel experiences unfathomable personal loss and love as she crosses continents and cultures to craft one of the defining American books of our time. Inspired by the New York Times best-seller “Caste,” ORIGIN aims to link the violent repercussions of American slavery to the horrific crimes of the Holocaust to India’s degrading caste system in a narrative that combines gnawing grief with a cyclical sense of history.
