Have You Ever Been in the Middle of a Gathering of Thousands of UUs?

For each of 50 years before the pandemic, the annual General Assembly (GA) of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA) would attract thousands of lay UUs and a majority of all UU ministers for a five day, late June convention.  GA moved around the country and when in the Midwest (Columbus, New Orleans and Kansas City) attracted 16 or 18 of our UUCUC members.  With the pandemic, the convention went virtual for one year and them hybrid for two years.  Next up will be Pittsburgh, June 21-25, 2023, and GA is again featuring in-person events.

While we do not really know how well this restoration will function, David Gross  (DLGgeology@aol.com) and Rev. Sally (associate-minister@uucuc.org) are thinking to organize a caravan of UUCUC folks to travel to Pittsburgh, an easy 480-mile Interstate drive.

GA is the annual business meeting of the UUA, and more importantly, is a gathering for hundreds of workshops, events, displays, worship, music and overall a wonderful morning to midnight party.  Finding common interests with the UU person sitting next to your elbow is universal.

UUCUC will have seven voting lay delegates, plus the minister and REE Director have votes, and this is a year to elect a new President of the UUA.  But for a first-time GA attendee, it can be more fun to not be a delegate and thus have fewer attendance obligations.

Unfortunately, GA is expensive with a registration fee of several hundred dollars plus hotel, meals and transportation costs.  Maybe with some ride sharing and hotel sharing we can find some savings.
