Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana Champaign Adult Religious Education presents a 4-week study of My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem

Tuesdays – April 13th and 27th, May 11th and 25th
6:00-7:30 PM

Resmaa Menakem is a trauma therapist and author who explores themes of race and trauma in black, brown, white and blue (police) bodies. Menakem takes the reader of My Grandmother’s Hands through an understanding of this trauma using meditation as a primary tool for exploring the themes in ourselves and community.

This 4-week book study is for anyone exploring themes of race, historical trauma, and healing. This is class for anyone who has already engaged in exploration and study of the current white-supremist structure, white privilege, implicit bias/or other related racial justice themes.

It is highly recommended that each participant read Robin DeAngelo’s White Fragility prior to beginning this course. Then participants will read My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem and engage in Menakem’s meditation and mindfulness practices. We will gather for our Tuesday sessions to engage in meditation as a community, explore Menakem’s themes and discuss their application to our life and society.

Our Facilitator: We are excited to have Rev. Dr. Delle McCormick serve as our facilitator for these sessions. Delle is a retired United Church of Christ minister, practicing spiritual director, and immigration and southern border activist working in Tucson, Arizona. Delle’s experience with racial and immigration justice along with her training as a spiritual director and minister will benefit everyone who engages in this study.

If you wish to join the study, please fill out this registration form.

Those engaged in the study commit to:
• Attending the Tuesday sessions
• Reading My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem
• Read up to Chapter 6 prior to the first class and engage in Menakem’s meditation practices which are written into the chapters.
• Engaging in the mindfulness and meditation practices Menakem outlines in his book.
