Property News From UUCUC’s Building and Grounds Team

From Jerry Carden, Chair of the Building and Grounds Team, and Kate Barton, Director of Facilities

Does it seem like literally forever since you’ve been through the hallowed doors at UUCUC? As of the 15th of July, it’s been four months that our services have been online, and no services or meetings held in our friendly church at Green and Birch. So what’s happening there?

Here’s a bit of a tour… Green Street is undergoing major renovations as part of the MCORE project. Here’s video footage from July 9th.  Video courtesy of UUCUC member, Jerry Carden.
And now here’s video footage from July 22nd. Big difference – looks almost ready to pave! Video courtesy of UUCUC member, Jerry Carden.

After the hail there were questions whether our solar panels might have been affected, and two weren’t working, according to the monitoring system. The technician came to check them out, and I had a chance to go up and look at not just the panels, but to inspect the roof membrane- to make sure it hadn’t been damaged. The panels were not damaged, but two of them did need service which the tech took care of.

Solar Panels on the roof of UUCUC – July 16th

You may remember an old house directly east of our playground that served as a counseling office and apartments. It’s been demolished and now an empty lot:

Each day, someone from the building access team walks through the building to make sure all is well, to empty the dehumidifiers, and make sure all doors locked. It’s a good thing, we recently found damage due to a problem with a urinal in the men’s room, and shattered glass in the door leading to the playground, we think broken from a thrown rock while our mowing was done.

Adopt-A-Plot Helpers

There are also the usual landscape volunteers taking care of their garden plots. The queen and king of landscape work is Anne and Dave Sharpe, helpers also include Herb Hiestand, Jerry Carden & Tim Temple, and Charlie Wisseman.

Volunteers anyone? We could use help with the following:

  • Landscape helpers- maybe an hour or two every couple of weeks to help tidy up the slopes area- a plot that could use adoption! Direction will be provided.
  • Do you have a truck?  Our Adopt-A -Plot volunteers fill bags with weeds, and sometimes trimmings from bushes or small trees. We currently have a small pile behind the stone building near the trash bins. If you have a truck and could head out to the Landscape Recycle Center periodically, we would be effusive with praise. Contact Jerry and we’ll keep you posted when help is needed- like NOW!
